Automatic and more efficient Robotic Welding for copper battery packs

The goal of the project is to develop an innovative,
robot-assisted high-speed welding system for
series production of battery cells with copper
connectors. Copper offers excellent electrical
properties but is difficult to weld. By integrating
intelligent control software and semiconductor-
grade motion systems, we aim to increase welding
speed by a factor of 10 without compromising quality.
aixcon PowerSystems and Vectioneer jointly develop
a scalable, cost-efficient solution that addresses
the needs of battery manufacturers, e-mobility and
energy storage providers, and research institutions
– contributing to a more competitive and sustainable
European battery production industry.

The plasma-activated decomposition of hydrocarbons such as natural gas (biogas, LNG, propane, etc.) into hydrogen and carbon using microwave plasma is an optimal way of solving the problems of the energy transition in the short and medium term. Battery Welding

Aixcon developed a process to weld copper cell connectors onto battery cells. Using copper as cell connectors increases their electrical conductivity, and thus increases the efficiency of a battery pack compared to commonly used materials (e.g. nickel-plated steel, nickel, etc.). Copper also has superior thermal conductivity, and provides an excellent heat sink for battery cells.

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation with Alternating Current and Asymmetric Electrodes For this project we developed a Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process that facilitates the coating of two light alloy parts simultaneously using alternating current. The coatings are as homogenous as conventional PEO processes with AC, but with double the process speed.
